What is a Gi?
A gi (or kimono) is a traditional martial arts uniform used in Brazilian
Jiu-Jitsu classes consisting of a jacket, pants and
colored belt which denotes your rank. When you become a member and are ready to purchase, please make sure it is a BJJ gi, as they are constructed to withstand the rigors of BJJ-specific training.
What do I need to bring for
my first class?
If you are participating in our BJJ classes (gi), you
will need a gi jacket, pants and a belt. If you are
participating in a no-gi or Combat Kickboxing class,
you will need to wear shorts and a t-shirt (some choose
to wear compression-style rash guards). No shoes are
worn on the mat during any classes. You may also want
to bring your own mouthpiece, groin protector and bottle
for hydration. Ask the front desk about borrowing a
gi, boxing gloves, or other gear if you're not ready
to purchase your own. We're always happy to help.
What can I expect during my
Classes begin on time, so please arrive at the school
with sufficient time to change. Once class begins, there
is a warm-up period consisting of exercises designed
to increase your cardiovascular, agility and strength
followed by drilling of techniques shown by the instructor.
The class is often concluded with partnering up and
working on techniques that you learned during that class,
sometimes in a live training or sparring environment.
Am I too old to begin training?
Absolutely not! There are so many inspirational stories
of people who started martial arts well into their 50's
and 60's and excelled in the gym and at competitions.
We view martial arts as a life long journey that has
very little to do with the age at which you start.
I feel like I am out of shape.
Should I begin training?
There's no time like the present to get into the shape
that you want to be in. Once you begin our classes,
you will not only get into great physical shape but
you will have peace of mind knowing that you can confidently
defend yourself in most situations.
Should I worry that I could
While injury can result in any physical activity, at
Evolution BJJ, we mitigate that risk by having an ego-free, collaborative
and friendly training environment. None of our members
have attitude, big egos and no one is trying to hurt
one another. We share a mutual goal and that is to make
each other better martial artists. Furthermore, our
instructors make every effort to pair you up with someone
who is at or near your skill level.
Are your facilities clean?
Yes, without a doubt! We disinfect our mats and and
training equipment on a daily basis. Our facilities
are cleaned regularly. Come see for yourself!
